A historic rise
Moldova has climbed to 7 th place in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index 2025, closing 81.3 % of its overall gap and vaulting past larger economies such as Germany, Ireland and Sweden. It is one of only two new entrants into this year’s top tier, alongside the United Kingdom.
How did Moldova get here?
Political Empowerment surges – the largest single-year gain came in women’s political representation: +7.5 percentage points since 2024, tripling the score recorded when the index began in 2006.
Parliament at 40 % women – unchanged since the 2021 elections, Moldova’s legislature remains a regional front-runner.
Cabinet near parity – women now hold 4 in 10 ministerial seats, far above the global average of 22.9 %.
Beyond rankings: what equality means on the ground
A stronger workforce
Modern childcare leave rules and upgraded early-education facilities are drawing more women into the labour market, while targeted grants help women-owned SMEs scale up.
Safer communities
Tougher legislation and specialised police units are reducing gender-based violence and improving victim support.
Smarter investment climate
For investors, gender parity signals stability, talent diversity and a governance culture aligned with EU standards. Invest Moldova Agency calls it “a competitive edge, not just a social goal.”
The road ahead
Moldova still faces pay-gap challenges and sectoral imbalances, but the trajectory is clear: equality is now embedded in policy, budget and mindset. With constitutional commitment to a European future and a proven reform record, Moldova positions itself as an open, innovative partner for those who value inclusive growth.
